A SINGLE PIECE BY ‘’J.F.G.'’
We know nothing for certain about the artist other than his/her initials, J.F.G. and the numbers 200-51 - both of which appear on the bottom wood cross piece on the back of the work.
We can tell you about the person who owned and displayed the work for the past half century:
An eccentric but deligtful woman who recently passed away at age 95, told us (the one time we visited three years ago to examine an old automobile she had placed for sale) that she had acquired the painting in the mid 1950’s from a dealer who claimed it was an experimental piece of Jackson Pollock. We did not tell her, but will tell you that we seriously doubt that Pollock ever had a brush or a turkey baster on this canvas!
Regardless, she liked the piece but had it installed along with some other paintings in her GARAGE where it reposed until recently, when we acquired it from her estate.
Now, her garage was not your ordinary kind with greasy rags, old lumber and empty oil cans and such but rather, was finished off much like a grand parlor, replete with many other pictures on the walls - all original paintings by a variety of artists. There were also several fine imported rugs on the floor - situated between a couple old Rolls Royces, a Jaguar and a Daimler-Benz!
We think the painting is beautiful and probably executed by one of those proverbial ‘’starving artists'’ of yesteryear. It would make a fine addition to anyone’s collection. Just would NOT advise telling someone that it ‘’might be'’ a Jackson Pollock!
